How a sentence works

…です · …ます · plain form

In speech, every sentence ends polite (です/ます) or casual (the plain form), depending on who you're talking to.

  • 毎朝(まいあさ)まいあさ コーヒー を 飲(の)のみます。maiasa koohii o nomimasu.

    PoliteI drink coffee every morning.

  • 毎朝(まいあさ)まいあさ コーヒー を 飲(の)のむ。maiasa koohii o nomu.

    CasualI drink coffee every morning.

Lesson: Polite and casual: two ways to end a sentence

… Verb。

In a normal sentence the verb, adjective or です/だ comes last; only small endings like か, よ and ね follow it.

  • 私(わたし)わたし は パン を 食(た)たべます。watashi wa pan o tabemasu.

    I eat bread.

Lesson: The verb comes last

Topic は Subject が …

The topic sets the scene, and the comment has its own が-subject: “as for today, the weather is nice”.

  • 今日(きょう)きょう は 天気(てんき)てんき が いい。kyou wa tenki ga ii.

    The weather's nice today.

Lesson: Topic first: set the scene, then comment on it

Noun + particle, in any order, then Verb

Particles label each word's job, so the pieces before the verb can move.

  • 昨日(きのう)きのう 友達(ともだち)ともだち と 公園(こうえん)こうえん で 遊(あそ)あそんだ。kinou tomodachi to kouen de asonda.

Yesterday I hung out with a friend in the park.

Yesterday I hung out in the park with a friend.

Lesson: Particles label each word, so the order can move

Adjectives, の phrases and whole clauses go before the noun they describe.

    a red car

  • 昨日(きのう)きのう 買(か)かった 車(くるま)くるまkinou katta kuruma
