The verb comes last

Subject – object – verb: why Japanese listeners wait for the end.
要点The idea
English goes subject – verb – object, but Japanese goes subject – object – verb: in a normal sentence the verb (or adjective, or です/だ) comes last, and only small endings like か, よ and ね follow it.

A肉(にく)にく を 食(た)たべます。niku o tabemasu.I eat meat.
B肉(にく)にく を 食(た)たべません。niku o tabemasen.I don't eat meat.
Yes or no is decided in the very last syllables. Always listen to the end of a Japanese sentence!
  1. A
    肉(にく)にく を 食(た)たべます か?niku o tabemasu ka?Do you eat meat?
  2. B
    肉(にく)にく は 食(た)たべません。 魚(さかな)さかな は 食(た)たべます。niku wa tabemasen. sakana wa tabemasu.Meat, no. Fish, yes.
  3. A
じゃあ、 すし は どう です か?jaa, sushi wa dou desu ka?Then how about sushi?
  4. B

B's answer turns on the last word of each sentence: 食(た)たべません, then 食(た)たべます. B also swaps を for は to contrast meat with fish: the Particles unit explains how.
