Particles label each word, so the order can move

Why you can shuffle the pieces before the verb — and the usual default order.
要点The idea
Particles label each word's job, so the pieces before the verb can be reordered without changing who did what.
昨日(きのう)きのう 友達(ともだち)ともだち と 公園(こうえん)こうえん で 遊(あそ)あそんだ。kinou tomodachi to kouen de asonda.Yesterday I hung out with a friend in the park.
昨日(きのう)きのう 公園(こうえん)こうえん で 友達(ともだち)ともだち と 遊(あそ)あそんだ。kinou kouen de tomodachi to asonda.Yesterday I hung out in the park with a friend.と still marks who with, で still marks where, so swapping them keeps the facts the same.
友達(ともだち)ともだち と 昨日(きのう)きのう 公園(こうえん)こうえん で 遊(あそ)あそんだ。tomodachi to kinou kouen de asonda.I hung out with a friend in the park yesterday.Time, partner and place can shuffle. The verb stays last.
A田中(たなか)たなかさん が 花(はな)はな を 買(か)かった。tanaka-san ga hana o katta.Tanaka bought flowers.
B花(はな)はな を 田中(たなか)たなかさん が 買(か)かった。hana o tanaka-san ga katta. It was Tanaka who bought the flowers. The flowers are now the known thing, and the focus falls on 田中(たなか)たなかさん, right before the verb, like an answer to “who bought the flowers?”
Same facts: が still marks the buyer and を the thing bought. In English, swapping the words would flip the meaning.
The usual default is roughly topic (は) or subject (が) → time → place → partner or target (と, に) → object (を) → verb. You can move pieces out of that order: whatever sits just before the verb tends to carry the new or important information, and things moved to the front feel like background.
  1. A
    この 写真(しゃしん)しゃしん、 誰(だれ)だれ が 撮(と)とった の?kono shashin, dare ga totta no?Who took this photo?
  2. B
    姉(あね)あね が 撮(と)とった よ。ane ga totta yo.My big sister took it.
  3. A
    え、 すごい! 上手(じょうず)じょうず だ ね。e, sugoi! jouzu da ne.Wow! She's good.
A starts with the photo, the thing both can see, and asks who. B answers with the new information, 姉(あね)あねが, right before the verb.
