お〜 and ご〜: the polite prefixes

Small prefixes that make a word polite, mostly for other people's things.
要点The idea
お〜 and ご〜 in front of a noun make it polite or refined: お usually goes on native Japanese words, ご on words borrowed from Chinese.
お茶(ちゃ)ちゃ を どうぞ。ocha o douzo.Have some tea.
ご家族(かぞく)かぞく は お元気(げんき)げんき です か?gokazoku wa ogenki desu ka?Is your family well?Polite when talking about someone else's family.
お名前(なまえ)なまえ は?onamae wa?What's your name?You'd never use お名前(なまえ)なまえ for your own name.
ご飯(はん)はん、 食(た)たべた?gohan, tabeta?Have you eaten?ご飯(はん)はん almost always carries its ご.
A仕事(しごと)しごと は 楽(たの)たのしい です か?shigoto wa tanoshii desu ka?Is (your) work fun?
Bお仕事(しごと)しごと は 楽(たの)たのしい です か?oshigoto wa tanoshii desu ka?Is your work fun?
お adds respect for the listener and their work; without it the question sounds plainer, fine between friends.
